Discover the Benefits USA Community Colleges & the 2+2 College Program

Studying abroad is getting more and more well-received among students in Cambodia as many of them can see the benefits of pursuing studies abroad for quality education, language acquisition and the opportunity to gain life-changing experiences.

According to Mr. Po Eng, EducationUSA Advisor from the U.S. Embassy, the number of Cambodian students studying in the United States has more than doubled since 2012, with an approximate 14% increase in the academic year 2020-2021.

However, students and parents are often consumed about which country to select and what course to choose from. There are many options, making it hard to select the right option. In this article, SOGO shares about community colleges and the 2+2 College Program in the USA and how it can benefit Cambodian students.

Did you know that a four-year university is not the only option to earn a bachelor’s degree in the USA? There is a great way to get a quality education at an affordable cost and with more flexibility: the 2+2 Program.

A 2+2 Program is offered through a partnership between a community college and a four-year university in the USA which means attending a community college for two years then transferring to a college or university for another two years. In just four total years, students can earn both an associate’s degree and a bachelor’s degree.

There are various benefits to participating in a 2+2 program and here are some reasons why students should consider a 2+2 Program when studying the USA.

Cost Effective: Tuition for a traditional 4-year college or university, especially for international students can be expensive. Typically, two colleges cost much less to attend—so students can save money through a 2+2 by paying for 2 years of a community college, and two years at a 4-year school.

Admissions & Requirements: With a few exceptions, community colleges will accept any student regardless of their prior academic performance provided they possess a benchmark secondary school completion credential or a high school diploma.

Flexibility: It is more flexible because there are various programs to choose from and students can explore different majors depending on what they’re interested in studying. Community colleges offer smaller classes with more personal attention.

Along with these benefits, Mr. Po Eng shared, “Increasing numbers of Cambodian students are interested in pursuing U.S. higher education through transfer programs or the 2+2 model at community colleges. I think pursuing U.S. degrees from the United States through community colleges is a smart choice for Cambodians because it is more affordable, would be a high reward college experience and often community colleges have flexible application requirements.”

The 2+2 Program is particularly useful for international students who want to strengthen their language skills and to prepare before attending a large university.
